Luz Elena Chapa (Democrat Incumbent)
Justice Luz Elena Chapa has served on the Fourth Court of Appeals since 2013. She interned for U.S. Cong. Lloyd Doggett and for the Fourth Court of Appeals.
Chapa received a bachelor’s degree and law degree from St. Mary’s University Law School. She has been licensed by the State Bar of Texas since 2000.
Chapa is a board member of the St. Mary’s University Law Alumni Association, an inductee into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame and recipient of the Mexican American Bar Association-San Antonio 2015 Community Leadership Award.
Patrick Ballantyne (Republican Challenger)
Patrick Ballantyne is currently Bexar County Assistant Criminal District Attorney. He began his career as a criminal defense attorney in San Antonio before becoming a prosecutor for the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. He is currently chief of the Conviction Integrity Unit, Ethical Disclosures Unit and Post-Conviction Writs Unit, and lead prosecutorial ethics trainer for the office.
Ballantyne received a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University New Orleans in 2001 and a law degree from Baylor University Law School in 2005. He has been licensed by the State Bar of Texas since 2006, and is board certified in criminal law.
Ballantyne is endorsed by TLRPAC and the Texas Civil Justice League PAC.
