(Austin, TX) Texans for Lawsuit Reform PAC noted today that the facts laid out in the latest “Lobby Watch” report by the trial lawyer front group, Texans for Public Justice, makes it clear that trial lawyers are spending millions in Texas to push their pro-lawsuit, anti-business, job killing agenda. TLR PAC spokeswoman, Sherry Sylvester said:
“TPJ has a serious glass house problem. Their latest report derides TLR PAC but fails to point out that their own chart reveals that personal injury trial lawyer contributions, including those from the Texas Democratic Trust and big checks from Steve Mostyn and John Eddie Williams at Texans for Insurance Reform, total almost $3 million this election cycle – more than any other business or industry.
TLR PAC’s contributors are a diverse group representing a broad range of businesses that share no partisan ideology or business agenda beyond their commitment to a fair and balanced civil justice system in Texas.
By contrast, the trial lawyers, with their deceptively named PAC’s, almost exclusively fund Democrats and represent a small segment of the legal community who want to pass laws that will increase their business and create more opportunities to sue.
Texans for Public Justice is a trial lawyer front group. While TLR PAC’s contributors are a matter of public record, all we know about TPJ’s funders is that they have included large contributions from the wealthy trial lawyers including John Eddie Williams. Joanne Doroshow, a nationally famous anti-tort reform advocate who lives in New York, is a member of TPJ’s three person board. TPJ simply has no credibility to speak on this issue. ”
TLR PAC is the political arm of Texans for Lawsuit Reform, the state's largest civil justice reform organization. TLR is a bipartisan, volunteer-led coalition with more than 17,000 supporters residing in 869 Texas communities and representing 1,266 different businesses, professions and trades.
